(10/5/04) HIGH SCHOOL QUARTET AND ENSEMBLE CONTEST The Arlington Heights Chapter, under the sponsorship of the Illinois District (SPEBSQSA), will host its eighth Young Men in Harmony Boys High School Quartet Contest, Sunday, February 13, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Barrington High School, Barrington, Illinois. On the same afternoon the Arlingtones will also host the fifth High School Boys Ensemble Contest. All participating quartets and ensembles should be in the choral rehearsal room at 12:15 for any last instructions on warm up rooms, appearances on stage, etc. The ensemble contest will be held first, starting at 1:00, followed by the quartet contest. The same Society judges will judge both contest. All awards will be presented to the winning participants after both contests are finished. Ensembles must consist of at least nine voices and can be as large a group as can fit onstage. In past contests, ensembles have numbered from 11 to 30 voices. Ensembles must sing two songs a cappella: one must be a barbershop arrangement, while the other may be any style of the contestants choosing. Each group will receive via mail a videotape of the contest within three to four weeks after the contest. The winning ensemble will receive $300 and a trophy that goes to the school. Second and third place will receive $200 and $100, respectively, for their school. Quartets must sing two barbershop arrangements. Costuming is not required, but looking alike is helpful. Any voice part can sing in two different quartets. Since the contest organizers draw for singing positions, quartets that share voice parts may have to be separated in order of appearance. The winning quartet receives $300 and a large trophy for the school, plus individual trophies for themselves. Second and third place will earn $200 and $100, respectively. There is no entrance or admission fee. We encourage all families and friends to come and support these young male singers. The first- and possibly the second-place quartet (depending on their scores) will be invited to compete in the Illinois District Spring Convention in Peoria Saturday, April 16, 2005. The contest begins at 7:00 p.m. that day. The first contestants will be the high school quartets, followed by the college quartets, and then the Societys quartets. The District and the Arlingtones will pick up the cost of the trip to Peoria (food, travel, and lodging) for the quartets and their music educators.
